Activities

Good Shepherd School offers many opportunities for the students to experience a variety of daily classroom as well as extra-curricular activities. These activities allow the students to build and enhance the skills needed to work cooperatively, appreciate diversity, share knowledge, and develop a deep respect for themselves and others.

We are proud to have provided many academic activities. These activities included: Junior Achievement collaboration with Serra Catholic High School, Future City Competition sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Pittsburgh Resource Council Energy Program, Spring Into Reading Program, Robotics Club in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, Starbase Atlantis Engineering Program, Diocesan Spelling Bee, PowerPoint Presentations, Cross-curricular activities involving our Hope Garden.

Good Shepherd sponsor's its own spelling bee each year inviting schools from the East Suburban Deanery.

Good Shepherd's basketball teams consist of boys' junior varsity and varsity, and girls' junior varsity and varsity.

Because diverse interaction is an integral part of being academically and socially successful, Good Shepherd incorporates many community activities including a buddy program. An upper grade class "adopts" a lower grade. Throughout the school year, the buddies get together to share in various academic and social activities. Each year the students tend a garden in which they grow vegetables that are later donated to a local food bank and grow flowers to beautify the community. The students make cards for Veterans, collect peanut butter and socks for the homeless, participate in the "Adopt a Retired Sister" program, and have Prayer Partners in the classroom. Some classes are enrolled in the E-Pals Communication program. Through the internet, the students are able to communicate with students of the same age from different countries.

Activities that take place outside the classroom include Altar servers, Bell Choir, musical productions, and weekly participation in the Liturgy. Field trips have been taken to a variety of cultural and historical locations such as Gettysburg Battlefield, Washington D.C. museums, Carnegie Science Center and the annual March for Life.
